DIY Painting Date Night

Finding ideas for date night is always a challenge. DIY painting at home is the perfect crafty date night idea to do together.

Our DIY painting date night came about after agonizing over things we could do together that didn’t involve a movie or television.  Those make great date nights as well, but I wanted to find something we hadn’t already done before.  I also wanted to get him involved in something I like to do, and since I’m into all things crafty, this seemed like the perfect idea.

This was a great date night idea, not only did it get us into something new, but we also ended up with artwork at the end.  I tend to spend money on craft supplies instead of decorations so this is something we could actually use.

A tree with 2 birds made by 3 paintings.

For this project you will need a few canvases.  At least one a piece.  I used 3 for my piece alone and my husband used 2.  Go big or go home right?  The number and size will depend on what you choose to create.

I bought a pack of 16”x20” canvases for this project. I really wanted to make something to hang over our bed, which is why I ended up needing 3 canvases.  Spreading the design out over 3 canvases also added interest and I think it turned out great.

You will also need acrylic paint and paint brushes.  I bought a basic paint set of 4 oz tubes and we just mixed the colors we needed from there.  We had white, black, blue, red, green, and yellow.  I also bought a beginner brush set with a bunch of different size brushes.  This turned out to be a great idea, we needed larger brushes for the background and little brushes for details.

I have a plastic paint palette that I have had for years but you could just use a paper plate.  I also covered the table with paper and had a cup of water for cleaning up messes.  Clean yogurt cups work great for this.

Paint, palette, water cup, and paint brushes.

We each an easel that I found for cheap.  We didn’t really use them.  It was easier to get the right angle with the canvas on the table.  Either way this is definitely something you don’t need.

I was not looking for professional supplies so I bought cheaper products that would let us try it and have some fun.  If you bought a set like this Liquitex starter box you could probably do this date night for around $30.  I of course didn’t see this set when I bought my supplies so I probably spent $40-50.

Work in progress paintings.

Add some snacks, your beverage of choice, and a little music and you are ready to go.  I found my inspiration on Pinterest while my husband went with a Star Wars design.  You can paint anything you want.  This project is all about spending time together and trying something new.

I will admit that this particular date night took more than one night.  It was really more like a date day and half but we had a great time.  If we hadn’t both gotten overly ambitious it may have actually fit in the date night time frame. The important thing is that we had a lot of fun with it.

If you give it a try I would love to hear how it went. Let me know in the comments below.
