Craft Kit Review Mermaid Water Globe

This mermaid water globe kit from Sophie and Toffee was a lot of fun and a great way to try resin crafting for the first time.

I have wanted to try resin for a while, so when I found this water globe kit I was pretty excited. I bought two kits online at Sophie and Toffee so I could try it with a friend.  The kit doesn’t come with instructions so we followed the video instructions made by NerdEcrafter.  Her instructions were great and easy to follow, though it would have been nice to have had written instructions.

Resin Kit Supplies

Where to Buy:

Extra Tools Needed:

  • 3 AAA Batteries
Fat Quarter Shop Quilting Fabrics and Supplies

It took us an hour and half to two hours to finish this kit.  We both have some supplies left over but without another globe and more resin we wouldn’t be able to make another snow globe.  This hurts the replayability though it does come with molds that you would be able to use again if you can find the globe.

This kit was great for beginners.  Neither of us have tried resin before and we had no trouble with the techniques needed for this project.  Crafters who are already experienced with resin probably wouldn’t need instructions but I would suggest that beginners watch the video.

This kit comes with resin, a glass globe, molds, shaker oil, decorations, and a mermaid.  I really liked the extra decorations like the sand, shells and bubbles, they add character to the snow globe.  I am also really excited to try the extra bubbles with polymer clay.

Partially Finished Resin ProjectFor this project we used resin to create the inside scene of the snow globe including the sea floor and a stand for the mermaid.  We then attached the snow globe to the sea floor we had just created and filled it with shaker oil.  Then we used the resin to create a base for the snow globe that had layers of sand, glitter, and bubbles.

This kit was a great introduction to resin crafting.  My main goal with craft kits is to see if this new craft is something I would be interested in going further with and I definitely think this kit was perfect for that.  I can now tell you that I liked resin crafting and I would do it again.  Now I will just need to find the time…

I would say that this kit is probably not great for kids.  The parts are small and it is a little tricky to get everything together without leaking.  This kit would probably be better for teenagers to adults.

I am going to give this water globe kit a 7 out of 10.  I had a great time with it and I will probably try resin again in the future.  The only thing I didn’t like about it is that it didn’t come with instructions.  A beginner kit really needs to come with instructions.  The company does link to the NerdEcrafter video on their website which helped immensity.  With instructions I probably would have given in a 9 out of 10.  I loved it.

If you have tried this kit or resin in general how did it go? I would love to see how your project turns out.  Post pictures to Instagram #boutsofspontaneouscrafting.  If you are looking for another fun craft kit to try check out my felt applique kit review.
