Pirate Birthday Card Tutorial

I’ve been in a bit of a card making mood lately so I thought I would make this pirate birthday card. Luckily, we have a few birthdays coming up over the next few months. This is an easy card to make though it did take me some time to color everything in.

I have really enjoyed the alcohol markers my husband bought me for my birthday this year.  Copics are a little expensive so he bought me the version made by Studio 71.  These markers are a lot of fun to work with.  They do bleed through the paper but you can color without leaving lines where you overlapped the lines and you can blend the colors together.  I don’t have Copics, so I can’t do a comparison for you but I like them.

I’m pretty sure I need more stamps.  I have my eye on an abominable snowman set.  Who doesn’t need an abominable snowman stamp set?

Card Making Materials

  • My Favorite Things Clear Stamps, Party Like A Pirate by Birdie Brown
  • My Favorite Things Die Set, Party Like A Pirate by Birdie Brown (Optional)
  • Happy Birthday Stamp
  • Markers
  • White Paper
  • Scissors
  • Paper Trimmer (Optional)

Cut the paper to size.

Cut an 8.5”x11” piece of light blue card stock in half.  This will give you two 8.5”x5.5” cards.  Fold one in half so you’ll have a 4.24”x5.5” card.

For the island, cut a piece of 8.5”x11” light brown card stock or paper an inch to two inched from the bottom.  Cut across the 8.5” side so you will end up with an 8.5”x 2ish” island.  Give your cut a bit of a wave so your island will have some hills.  Do this twice so it will look like all your pirates are on the same island.

Using your tape runner or glue, I used both, glue the brown paper to the bottom of both sides of your card.  I folded mine first to make it easier to glue.

Using the black stamp pad, stamp the pirates and accessories onto your white paper.  I used most of the stamps that came with the set and quite a few extra coins and treasure chests.

I use drawing paper because it works better with alcohol markers.  It doesn’t pill up like printer paper does.  Use what works best for you.

Color the stamped images.

Color each piece in.  If you have the Party Like A Pirate Die set you can cut them out now.  If not, cut each piece out with scissors.

Glue each of your pirates and accessories where you would like them to go on the card.  Don’t forget to leave yourself a place to write.

Color the white outline of each piece to match the background behind it.

I stamped the saying right on the card.  I used the Ahoy, Matey! Stamp from the set and the birds for the back of the card.  I also used the letters from the Alphabet Banners Framelits by Sizzix to spell our Happy B-Day.  You can use any saying stamp for this.

Your card is ready to send.  My card won’t go out for a while, I got a little over excited when I saw the stamps and had to play with them.  I’ll be ready in August when I need it.

This pirate birthday card is made using the Party Like A Pirate stamp set by My Favorite Things. This tutorial walks you through creating this super cute card.
